As with any other surgical procedure, the gastric banding surgery has a high risk profile, which is important to understand in detail before undergoing the surgery. The following is a comprehensive list of the issues which may occur. This list was extensive & is not intended to worry, but simply inform about the range of probable complications, not considering of how rare the issue is.

• Infection of the tissues surrounding the port site or the band. This may require treatment with the antibiotics & in exceptional conditions removal of the band.
• Damage to the organs Any type of keyhole method can be complicated by the unintentional injury to organs near the area of the surgery. This requires a repeat of surgery, removal of the band & repair of the organs which are damaged.
• Deep Venous Thrombosis (clots in the veins) & pulmonary embolus (clots in the lungs) will occur.
• Pneumonia/chest infection

Surgical team will take all the possible measures to decrease these risks, but if these complications occur even after taking measures, treatment is necessary.
